Stuck Alone in Snow Storm Overnight | Building Log Cabin

  • Episode 21 on the log cabin build series!
Sometimes I get caught up in the build and don't really think about how dark it starts to get. When the snow blizzard hit I thought that this is a great time to show you viewers my tent finally. This is just me doing the usual routines in the tent but many wanted to see this so hopefully you will enjoy the time as much as I do. The best part about building a log cabin in the middle of a dense forest is that even when it is super windy only the tree tops blow in the wind. Sleeping on the ground in winter is...not the greatest. You get more used to it over time and I would recommend trying it at least once in life but be prepared.
    My Story:
When I graduated high school I sought a big challenge in life. To alone, with only simple hand tools and raw power, build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish forest. I film everything myself and edit these videos so you can follow my journey and hopefully learn as I do. I have no earlier experience in any of this, just a visualization of what I want to achieve and willpower to learn and improve everything necessary. So I enjoy reading good advice in the comments. Enjoy!

Yeah I'd at least use a chainsaw, just watching him sawing the logs to insert the roof I'd be pretty tired doing just one of those lol. But I know their style is about building the cabins like their forefathers so that's why they do it all by hand

It's great to see how much knowledge you have working with wood, and especially axes; this kind of knowledge has only come to me in the past 4 or 5 years, and I'm 41. But, being as old as I am, watching you swim in the icy water is disconcerting, to say the least. Maybe when I was your age I could have done it, but now, my feet would be frozen for a week. They are cold even now in my warm house with socks and slippers on. Well, I guess it's only 17 degrees in my house, so not that warm. It was almost 30 degrees about a month ago,; the weather is so strange.

@SylviaSummers77 I mean others are born to handle cold more, there's a lot of people in the north that can't handle the cold, so a modern lifestyle has certainly made more people sensitive to it. But we were originally people who could handle cold better. You can be a Swede, but you'd have to be careful when we don't have summer. Which is something around 270 days per year.

I do have to ask: When you started trimming back the gable-end logs to match the roof pitch, is there a specific reason you chose to do it by axe instead of sawing down the guiding boards you nailed down? Would that not be faster? Or does the sawing interfere with the end grain and moisture resistance? Genuinely curious, I am doing something similar (on a much much much smaller scale) and I'd like to be prepared (and my tiny little test hut to be a durable one)

Good thing you were prepared to spend the night, I'm hoping the cat and dog slept well with you. Amazing bath and swim in the river.
