I used to do that to my PC screen when it wouldn’t load out of frustration, just fairly lightly so the screen would go a distorted colour for a sec.

@Mythos Infinite there is no problem with fanservice. While I agree that Fates blundered with how in your face it is, it shouldn't be what makes or breaks the game. The story, like most in other strategy games is not the main draw.
On the topic of characters have you.. read the supports? The supports were done by a different writing team and as a whole does a much better job of serving the characters justice than the story ever could. Aside from the characters that couldn't be salvaged like Peri or Soleil the characters are all likeable and have interesting supports. Reina is my favorite FE character of all time because of her one support chain.

One important fact you didn't mention about the 2 Zelda Oracle games is that they were originally meant to be a TRIO. Capcom was commissioned to do 3 games, but bridging a story across 3 games that could be completed in any order proved to be way to complicated.
So they cut it down to 2, and the 3rd game Capcom was contracted to still make for Ninty resulted in Minish Cap.

Small error: Yo-Kai Watch 3 in North America and Europe is not actually a localization of Tsukiyaki (the third version from Japan) but instead a unique all in one edition featuring content from all three versions made specifically for NA and EU, making it the definitive edition of the game, and ironically not playable in Japanese at all

So fun story I have about the Pokémon versions -
My parents didn't like getting my brother and I a copy of a game each. They considered it a waste of money and encouraged us to share on different save files. However, with Pokémon, having 2 versions meant that was justified as different games and we only had to fight over which version we would each get 😅
So my brother got Ruby, Diamond, and Y, and I got Sapphire, Pearl, and X
Now we DID get Emerald each. But after explaining to our parents that there was only one save file and the story was different to the last games, they gave in

You forgot to mention but Level 5, the developers of Yo-Kai Watch had another fairly successful series on the DS and 3DS, called Inazuma Eleven. A football based RPG. THAT FOLLOWED THE EXACT SAME RELEASE FORMAT. The first game being a single version, the second having a fire and ice variant and then the third game having 3 different versions, with one of the versions being the definitive one.

To be fair with Nier there are a decent amount of differences between the two versions. Whole they both follow the same plot and the same characters the main character being younger or older does actually change a decent amount of stuff. Their relationships with their party members, ideological philosophy and relationships with other people around them is way different. So when it comes down to it these characters being different doesn't change the main way the plot goes on but it does change the way they interact with the world and vice versa.

A decent example of this working was the Medabots RPGs on the GBA - while the story mode was identical, the starting Medabot and medals available to the player throughout the game highly incentivized using certain playstyles depending on the version. Metabee Version leads the player towards using long-range Medabots and a somewhat slower playstyle, while Rokusho version highly incentivized using melee and status-inflicting Medabots with a higher risk/reward playstyle. There are a decent amount of version-exclusive characters as well, allowing a playththrough of each game being a very different experience despite having the exact same story mode.

One I would like to add : "Looney Tunes Collector" with the games "Martian Alert" and "Martian Revanche" on Game boy Color.
It shares similar music, the same gameplay/engine with the same characters but differs with a completely different story and a different main character (either Bugs Bunny or Marvin Martian). As for the need to have the 2 games together to unlock stuffs, I have to no idea about it (surely because I didn't liked those games enough to just finish the main story).

  • Time Dragon
    Time Dragon Vor Monat +64

What's always important to remember about Pokemon is that the dual releases are meant to encourage trading and interact with other players. Being sociable has always been a secondary goal of the franchise.

    • L1LE1
      L1LE1 Vor 22 Tage

@Solstice The social aspect is dead? Unlikely. Honestly, what rock did you stay under? Just because there's less Pokémon players now compared to back then, doesn't mean the dedicated Pokémon players aren't worth socialising with.
Because, tbf, nowadays it's so easy to communicate with other Pokémon fans thanks to the means of communication via social media. Especially compared to the early entries. So get that idea that it's hard to find others out of your head.
Pokémon's greatest strength is to be able to trade and battle with others. Hasn't changed back then, hasn't changed now. It's still the only prolific RPG that's unique to that.
Sure, it could have a better solo experience. Not denying that. But with what I can observe, is that the solo campaign is moreso made as a means to gather the tools for competitive or collection. Not just that, but also a tutorial for new players. The Grass/Fire/Water starters are still there, because it's a perfect trio in understanding type advantages for those new to the series as an example.
The means to create competitive teams is at a state where its so much easier to do so by Sword and Shield, and not something left for hardcore fans that had the dedication to get perfect IVs, EVs, Abilities, etc.
Collecting is also easier. Ask online through social media like Discord for a specific Pokémon (no guarantee that you'd get it for free however), and there you go.
Lastly, Scarlet and Violet actually has a co-op function. Probably alike Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, but with the potential to journey with a friend across the oceans.

    • Solstice
      Solstice Vor 22 Tage

@L1LE1 There's important context to be had between early Pokemon and now, yeah? Back when the originals released they were on very cheap handhelds that pretty much everyone owned, so it really wasn't hard at all to find someone with another version of Pokemon to trade with. The GBA and DS continued the trend of being cheap and widely available meaning they retained the same saturation and density of Pokemon player base as the originals, only declined a bit. The 3DS saw a major decline in this (and a decline in main series Pokemon releases in general) but it wasn't seen as a glaring issue yet.
But now we have Pokemon on the Switch, a console you'll be paying at least $200 for, but most people would want to go for the $300 version. It's mainly designed as a console that would be shared between a family. To think it's nearly as easy to find other people to trade with and play into the social aspects of the game with (other than dedicated Pokemon fans) as the older releases on the Switch is just silly and to pretend like it's anywhere close to the same situation is asinine. The social aspect of Pokemon is pretty much dead so it's about time they moved on to creating rounded single-player experiences that can be supplemented by trading and battling with friends if you have some that play the game without it needing to be a necessity to 100% the game.

@Internet Guy its because people realised how forced and empty the games are. Releasing two games now is old, its a tradition that served pokemon well to advertise better, and earn more money. The general perspective of dual releases or games having two versions is usually chalked down to having different bosses or characters to fight/meet. For example, some bosses you fight in Battle Network 3-6 onwards are exclusive to one version or another. Another thing they did with Battle Networks 3-6 was that some chips (the collecting aspect of those games) were exclusive to a specific version which made trading with others (like how you trade pokemon with others) a necessity in terms of 100% completion

Another dual-ish release was Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion releasing the same day. If you used the GameCube's GBA link cable you could connect them to unlock the Fusion suit in Prime and the original Metroid in Fusion.
I guess it was tough to decide which to play first, in Europe we didn't get Prime until February 2003 though so that wasn't a decision I had to make.

I've always wondered if these dual releases added any extra costs or complications to the publishers. What happens if everyone prefers one version and there's loads of excess stock of the other version? Do you have to ensure all retailers have enough stock of both versions? Do you pay the box art designer one larger fee that covers both artworks, or do they cost it up as two separate artworks?? Seems more hassle than it's worth to me

The reason Nier was split was because Square thought the father/daughter dynamic in Gestalt would be received better overseas than the brother/sister one in Replicant, so they made that version for the west, then realised they could publish it in Japan as well due to how much effort went into making it. Gestalt in Japan was more of a novelty than anything, as it doesn't even have a Japanese dub-the game's VA work is completely in English, despite the fact they'd only need to hire one more actor.

  • Bird of Clay

Another thing about the version exclusive Pokemon in the split Pokemon Mystery Dungeon releases is that they didn´t have a "Collect them all" theme. It is possible to "recruit" all the Pokemon, albeit (very) tedious, but nobody ever tells you to and to my knowledge there is no acknowledgement let alone reward for doing it.
The only game where recruiting all the Pokemon has a benefit is Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, the mono game release after Gates to Infinity. Which is probably why they completely reworked the recruitment mechanic in that one.

Fun fact for anyone who cares, Nier wasn’t supposed to be a dual release. Replicant was originally going to be the only version before Square decided that Americans wouldn’t want to play as a Teenager and made the devs make another version with an older character, which is why only Gestalt released outside Japan originally. Replicant was the only one that was remastered later since it was supposed to be closer to the creator’s original vision and included scenes cut from the original game.

As controversial as it may be, I’d say my favorite dual-release has to be Fire Emblem Fates with both Birthright and Conquest. While the marketing of “choose your own path” is a bit misleading, since you kinda have to choose your route before buying the game due to being locked behind…well, a game, they still put plenty of effort into diversifying each game. Each one has a unique story that plays out entirely different, a separate roster of characters, an exclusive class for your avatar (Nohr Noble is better though), and even their own distinct maps! And it’d even pull the same trick as Pokémon by releasing a third version later on that combined the characters from both games with Revelations.
As much as I dig Three Houses and think it fixed plenty of Fates’s issues, it having every route in one game is a bit of a double-edged sword. Being that plenty of the same content is reused across that game’s routes, instead of feeling like distinctive experiences like in Fates.
At this point though, I’m pretty much over the whole multi-route narrative in FE. Hence why despite how dubious I am about it, I’m at least glad that FE Engage finally seems to be going back to a more linear and traditional FE storyline.

Pokémon nowadays seems to have moved on from the third version and is instead seeming to move more towards DLC expansion for existing versions (though the games do get a physical re-release with the DLC on the cart, so THAT might count as it's third version). Well, at least they did with Sword and Shield so far, Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl and Legends Arceus got nothing outside of the usual patches (though PLA did get a free mini update that added a new side quest), but it's highly likely we'll see the same practice with Scarlet and Violet.
I'm in two minds about this. It's great because you don't have to buy the same game a year or two later at full price just for a few new features, you can do all the new shit with your existing game and save file. There's also the addition of both returning Pokémon and a few new ones, which does somewhat remedy the bitter taste of the National Dex controversy and it's true what they say, absence does make the heart grow fonder. Plus this is what fans have wanted Pokémon to do since Nintendo could do DLC for their games, especially after the insult that was UltraSun and UltraMoon, which released less than a year after Sun and Moon, did little to nothing to change up the main story (and what little they did change was arguably for the worst), all to play a brief gauntlet sidequest featuring past villains and a new way of hunting legendaries. While the post game had a generally positive reception, everyone said basically the same thing, "it should've been DLC". And now it feels like Pokémon has gotten a little more with the times.
There are quite a few problems, however. While paying $30 for DLC IS cheaper than buying another whole ass $60 game, are you really getting your money's worth? The Expansion Pass contains two new areas with a handful of new side quests and modes, and while it's enough to sink your teeth into, I don't know if I can say it feels like half of the size of what the main game offered. Nintendo are usually generous when it comes to DLC (compared to other big name developers, I mean), but it does feel stingy by comparison. Then there's also the fact you need to buy an expansion pass for each game, so if you own both versions, you're paying $60 (welp, so much for that discount, fuck you for being a loyal customer).
Going back to the National Dex controversy, while there is an excitement to seeing old Pokémon return, it does feel a bit like those Pokémon are being held hostage behind DLC. Sure, they promise that the Pokémon are being added back in for free and you can use them anyway without the DLC, but you cannot catch those Pokémon in the base game, they can only be found in the DLC areas. The only way to obtain them without DLC is through Pokémon Home, which is a paid subscription service at $15 a year, or through either Max Raids or getting lucky with Surprise Trade, which you still need to pay for because of Nintendo Switch online. Your only OTHER chance is that hopefully you have a nearby friend who has the DLC Pokémon that they can trade you, but there's a high chance they had to pay for the DLC or other services themselves. Either way, you're paying for your old Pokémon.
But I think the biggest downside is that the base game remains largely unchanged, which is a problem if said game is as mediocre as Sword and Shield was. The Pokémon standard for the longest time was that the first two versions might've not been that great, but the third version would've fixed most of the issues and been what the game was meant to be, with the most obvious contenders being Ruby and Sapphire to Emerald and Diamond and Pearl to Platinum. While at the time those new versions felt insubstantial, in you're replaying them hindsight, why would you play anything other than Yellow, Crystal, Emerald or Platinum (save for a few exclusives that were ommitted, like Mareep in Crystal)? Especially when the story modes in those games also feel like the definitive tellings of those stories. In hindsight this practice may have been a bit greasy, like Game Freak knew they were releasing the beta versions for fans to playtest only to release the proper game a year or two later, but it was something fans were used to. The obvious exception being the Gen V games, as both Black/White and Black 2/White 2 hold value being played together, though B2W2, like other third versions, DID also fix several of Black and White's faults, so that part of the tradition was consistent.
It only started to get really problematic with X and Y onwards. X and Y were kind of mid, but the potential was there, and the expectation was that the inevitable Z (or X2Y2) would be the perfect Kalos region experience that fixes everything, but it never happened. According to leaks, a Z version(s) was in fact planned, but was cancelled to make way for new Pokémon titles Sun and Moon to celebrate Pokémon's 20th anniversary. And like I mentioned earlier, UltraSun and UltraMoon weren't the "perfect" Alola region games, but rather two steps forwards, one step back, and I think this was when the fandom (and subsequently, The Pokémon Company) saw less value in the third versions. So yeah, at this point it was a gamble as to whether or not the base game would improve, but with Sword and Shield it really was nothing. The main story and way you progressed was just as mediocre as before, with the only substantial difference being early access to the Isle of Armor (1st DLC expansion, the 2nd expansion, Crown Tundra, is postgame only), its exclusive Pokémon and Dynamax Soup (which allows you to Gigantamax certain Pokémon you catch outside of Raid Dens), but that's all superficial.
This means that if future Pokémon games have mediocre base games but you see potential for them to be something better, you're going to have to wait a long, long time to see that region being done justice, if at all. I really hope they get it right with Scarlet and Violet, because now they really only have one chance to get it right.
