Axe Tree Felling for Log Cabin Hand Tools Winter | 1.0 | - One Man Traditional Log Cabin series

  • Am 11 Mär 2019 veröffentlicht
  • My first youtube video and my first video on the log cabin series!
I am soon graduating from high school and want a big challenge in life. I decided that before I continue my studies I'm going to take a year off where I alone with only hand tools and raw power build my own off grid traditional log cabin by hand in the Swedish forest.
In this episode I am felling trees in the winter with felling axe and handsaw. I am also limbing, measuring and bucking spruce trees for my log cabin. I have done about half of all the logs I will be needing off camera.
Next episode will show the debarking of some trees with a draw knife and bark spade.
If you wish to follow me on this journey, from forest to off grid log cabin, then click the link to subscribe: declips.net/user/ErikGrankvi...

I was totally blown away at the shear endurance and skill you have shown in your videos. I had my 2 beautiful Granddaughters watching your videos with me to show them that when you put your mind to it you can do things you didn't know was possible. You are an inspiration and I know that your Parents and Family have to be so proud of you. Blessings to you and your bright future young man!!!!!

Hi Erik, I really admire your craftsmanship. I've never seen anyone fit logs as closely as you have -- using only manual tools (axe, adz, & drawknife). I also admire your conservation ethic -- planting trees to replace the ones you've harvested. BTW, did you make (forge) the drawknife you use? If not, can you tell me where you bought it?

Erik, since you're using Gran, it would be best to make sure that you use long overhangs on the eaves and gable ends to keep the rain off the walls.

I see this video is 2 years old but I just found it last night. Dude i can not wait to keep watching what you are doing. I'm in my 30s and would love to do this one day. But i have no land. I like how you mostly just keep the sound of nature and your work. You did have some background music there for a little. I'm not a fan of that. I'd rather just listen to the all natural. But to each their own. Anyways I will be binge watching till I catch up to what you are doing today! can't wait to see the final project! Thank you man. Good luck!

Hej Erik ! I am going to start my cabin, either a small timmerstuga or post and beam , this summer, on an island in Maine. The climate is the same as yours, and so is the land. Very rocky It looks like you are felling your trees around the first week of spring...Marc 21st. I could ring and kill them , and leave them standing to dry for a year. but I am almost 70 years old...and I need this cabin soon! But I don't want crakes! what do you suggest? I can't do it now as I am in Arizona for the winter.

I watched a couple videos a while back on it and when i was a kid my neighbour and i started one in our childhood forest but never really knew what we were doing or had proper tools. you show everything step by step adn the tools to use so i think ill give it another go! i like that underground cold storage and splitting stone technique. im in the rocky west so thats gunna come in handy. thank you very very much man. excellent job!

  • Nancy Gregg Pasiecznik

Hello, Erik. I saw two of your later videos (building the cabin) and decided to go back to the beginning. Some of the comments, possibly from people who know you, suggest that you are doing this because you have a taste for adventure. Is that true? Or are you building a cabin so that when you decide to marry, you can persuade The One that you are serious and will be a good provider? Is cabin building like this a tradition in your family? Are there more young men of your caliber in Sweden? (I'm 70 and have not seen such determination and dedication in men in my country, the U.S.A.)

my question is... having seen just the first video... did you live in the wilds for the whole year hunting and surviving whilst building the cabin? or did you go home to a normal house & food & just keep going out to make the cabin? also, why does it take a year to make a cabin? surely you'd want to make it quickly to live and survive IN THE CABIN for as long as possible? hey, i know nothing about these things.. just inquisitive.

@Andy McCabe so what did the original people do when making those cabins for living in? live in a tent - campsite or shoddy cabin thats quicker to build and then build a more permanent cabin during a year? or work in groups to complete each cabin quicker?

Perhaps you should think about how long it takes to fell ONE tree, remove the branches, cut it to length, transport it to site, de - bark it......
....then I think you can answer your own questions.........!

    • Erik Grankvist
Erik Grankvist  Vor 2 years +2

@baum stamm The Swedish traditional saws are really good. That is what I am using. Brands like Sandviken and bahco. I really recommend a big "one man operated" Timmersvans from Sandviken for felling. And a bahco bowsaw for more finer sawing, but I mostly use a axe for ex delimbing. Nowadays you have the Japanese Silky saws which are really good but very expensive. I have a small packable one for camping.
