I Spent 500 Days Surviving Minecraft in Real Life

  • Gathering natural materials to build own house. With a backpack full of hand tools. Real life Minecraft. Striving through the harsh climates of Sweden. Simple and Independent. Living my dream.
    This is a 15 min version of the 2 hour long video "One Year Alone In The Forest of Sweden | Building Log Cabin like our Forefathers"
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBX5q...
    If you have already seen the 2 hour video, I understand if you don't want to see this. There will be a new episode soon, where I work on the last logs for the roof. This video was just made as a front page video for my channel, if you are new and need a quick catch up.
    In the video I spent 500 days alone in the forest working on the log cabin. Most nights I slept on my grandparents homestead.

    My Story:
    When I was 18 years old I ventured out alone with only a backpack full of simple hand tools to actualize my dream. Build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish wilderness. Just like our Forefathers did.
    I had no previous experience in building, gathering materials or filming. So I started studying myself the old arts and learning from my grandfather and mentor Åke Nilsson. I began to cut down trees and film with my phone, learning as I go. I filmed everything myself and edited this video so you can follow my journey and hopefully learn as I do.
    This is: Minecraft in Real Life

    My fullest respect for the beautiful work you've done with building this. Living in the nature is one of the most important privileges humanity ever had and I thank you to keep this way of life alive. One day, I want to be able to live without any modern technology just the way the generations before did it. It is so heart-warming to realize that there are still some people in the world who appreciate their environment without destroying it. We have only one earth and we have to protect her. This is exactly what you do witch this build. Thanks for letting us be a part of your beautiful journey. May there be many happy years for you to come.

    I've been watching for another video from you. This refresher of your accomplishments, so far, is fantastic! Your determination, perseverance and determination still astonishes me. It would be a privilege to actually know you!
    There are a lot of things I'm very curious about, but don't want to know ahead of time...
    How much, and in what areas, did your grandfather mentor you;
    What you will use for the roof, can you construct the roof alone, how you will insulate it;
    What you will use for heating - fireplace or wood-burning stove...you certainly have plenty tinder for either one😉;
    If you will build the furniture for the cabin - (chairs, table, bed, etc.) Those hides you have would be great to use for furniture. After watching you construct the sawhorses, I'm confident you can build furniture, too. I wondered if some of the strips of bark you removed from the logs could even be woven and used to make seats or backs for chairs;
    What you will use for windows - if it will be glass or shutters;
    How you will construct the door;
    If you will build/dig an outdoor toilet;
    How you will complete the porch...
    I've went back and watched all of your videos, and I'm really looking forward to continuing to watch this unfold!!!
    Great work!!!!!

    Nice! Question though: I guess that the moss between the log is placed as a seal to avoid air gaps, but wont that moisture kept in between (especially for the moss placed on rainy days) cause the wood to rot afterward? Building a cabin in the woods, alone, without any prior experience is dope as fuck man, GJ! editing it like you did, releaseing merch about it and being incredible hipster about it; is the opposite. Think I just found the definition of half winning, half loosing!

      Watching this from Canada, oh the dream, would love to move to Northern Europe and do this, so beautiful. wow did I ever get so tired out for him. seeing him do all that work by himself is freaking crazy, must be exhausting, but at least he can sleep quite well from it.

    thanks for these videos i had recorded my own film of kayaking the rhine with my dog last year but i never did anything with it but now i have decided to put it together and upload it. i watched the 2 hour one last week and it made me realise something i had known for a long time that i was unhappy with my life. i got to the final year of dental school in Hungary and i was depressed and filled with anxiety and i had not had a smile on my face in 3 years. i failed out of my exams and was in a very bad mental state where i had to find professional help. i am from ireland and i had my dog and it was going to be 600 euro to fly her home so instead i bought a kayak and gathered my camping gear and i sailed over a 1000km my dog and i along the river rhine from start to finish. i had a gopro and filmed the journey however i had problems recharging it as the corona virus had just began and everything closed last march. it was the most amazing 3 months of my life just being alone with my dog. i never did anything with the footage i filmed but after watching your channel i have been inspired to put it together into a film, sadly it was my first time recording something and i have very bad angles and i missed some of the coolest moments but i want to keep filming and do more adventures now. i have been thinking of building my own cabin here on my dads farm i just need to get the money to get the timber as sadly i dont have access to a forest like yourself but it is my dream to make one here and some day be able to buy a plot of land in the mountains of norway or canada.

    I have a technical question.
    Do you seal all logs with moss? In the movies it looks like you only do it in certain places. Btw great content, keep going :)

    I tell you Nerdy Woodsman?
    You picked just about the perfect year and a bit to be in the wilderness...what with all the giant mess from Covid-19 going on.
    With lockdowns and facemasks and social distancing and an economic depression?
    You timing was PERFECT, IMO.
    I enjoyed the video.
    Peace.

    No wonder why erik is named ”grankvist” as last name. He isn’t born in the woods, the woods was born out of him.
