What she saying at 9:00 is true. I used to have a friend who majored in paleontology at u of l. To this day she has still not found a job with that degree. She was complaining to me that she went to the career services and they couldn't find her a job. I asked her what job she was looking for without degree and she said she didn't know, but they told them they would help them with job placement. She said she didn't like the jobs they were referring to her. She basically has a pretty framed piece of paper because that degree got her nowhere. seems like a dumb decision on her part, but I'm glad that the school is taking steps to prevent that. Not to mention she's in so much debt because that school is not cheap.

Intelligent lady, I was 1 aiming for a university and had some set backs then tried a trade school now actually has a career taking care of business, less debt student loan paid off and advanced more in technology because it all really depends on the drive in someone to become better, George Washington Carver didn't attempt a prestigious college that lead him to be 1 of the greatest scientists of all time.

Hi, African and African American Studies Major here(: It’s sad to hear that a lot of HBCU’s (including mine, Claflin University) are pulling away from the liberal arts. Going to grad school and earning a terminal degree are also worthy futures to look towards! Just remember that Sociology and Religion/Philosophy majors have successful futures ahead of them too.

Who is that blankety-blank in the orange hoodie? He is too ignorant to be part of this convo who totally misses the point of COLLEGE and UNIVERSITY which is NOT to teach people to work with their hands but with their minds. I applaud Dr. Artis for self-restraint in responding to the ignorant bait and, instead, remind us what she's been saying throughout-- HBCUs must retool to teach entrepreneurship (which PWIs aren't teaching directly) and get into the cockpit (and 21st century work) rather than be mechanics.

Listen the answer shouldn't be I don't blame top athletes if they go to schools that provide more visibility, The SOLUTION going forward should have our black athletes and HBCU presidents push the NCAA to donate money to HBCUs and HBCUS need to negotiate with the NCAA to figure out how they can become division 1 schools, so black athletes can choose HBCUS and force the NCAA to make these HBCUs get the visibility they deserve. HBCUS NEED that NCAA money it isn't fair that 90% of the NFL and NBA are black but the HBCUs don't get to benefit from our athletes. This Coronavirus quarantine, is a PERFECT opportunity to renegotiate this system. Second, raising $10 million in a month isn't nothing (nor is it sustainable you can not have a poor alum class, let's keep it real, they are not ballin' the top 5% of us has $350,000 liquid, are you going to exhaust the top 1% resources or are you getting foreign alumni to donate?), to donate $10million a month, collectively black ppl don't have the funds) PLEASE quit quoting the 1 trillion in buying power myth, this has already been debunked by Dr Jared Ball. Let's root out info in DATA and get real about our wealth position in this country! White capital donates billions, this is the reason these HBCU presidents should be on board and get political for a reparations policy. She just told you all the problems black students face because of their lineage connected to economic discrimination and slavery.

  • L D

Whenever I research HBCUs, they always seem to make a point that it’s purpose is to educate African Americans and PEOPLE OF ALL RACES. Anytime I see something that is supposed to be BLACK, but goes out of it’s way to to make sure everybody else benefits also, I immediately believe that fuckery is involved.

    • chigasaki06
      chigasaki06 Vor 6 Tage

That's because anyone can attend, but there are a lot of misinformed white people who believe that HBCUs are only for black folks. If most of the potential students are going to PWIs, obviously they have to market to a larger pool of potential students.

Because with a large program, schools can fund other areas of the university. I attended a well known state university with a top 10 basketball program. Their program runs itself and it actually helps to market the university because it's "cool" and "exciting."

I liked her answer about why HBCUs are important. I couldn’t have said it any better. But as a sociology major and now data analyst I would be pissed if she got rid of my major. It’s honestly not about the major it’s about what you do with it.

chigasaki06 what people don’t understand about sociology is you can learn data analysis, coding and how to practically apply it to the big picture instead of being a robot and needing hand holding.

    • chigasaki06
      chigasaki06 Vor 6 Tage

Yes and no. The reality is students with tech degrees are in higher demand. A company doesn't need or want a sociology major when they need coders. My cousin is a computer science major and has several job offers and he's not even finished with school. Also, technical degrees earn more on average, earlier in their careers. It's just what the market demands at the moment.

Going to trade school doesn't guarantee you'll never pursue a college degree. I know people with four year degrees who attended trade schools after to start a side business. How about HBCUs add trades back to the curriculum like they were in the past and we could get the best of both worlds.
