Prepping Timber Logs for Log Cabin | 3.0 | -One Man Traditional Log Cabin series

  • Am 29 Apr 2019 veröffentlicht
  • My third video on the log cabin series.
I am soon graduating high school (5 weeks left) and want a big challenge in life. I decided that before I continue my studies I'm going to take a year off where I alone with only hand tools and raw power build my own off grid log cabin by hand.
In this episode I am prepping timber logs for my log cabin: peeling/debarking som logs and felling.
If you wish to follow me on this journey, from forest to off grid log cabin, then click the link to subscribe: declips.net/user/ErikGrankvi...

Sitting on a log, sliding along peeling bark... I have spent More Hours doing just that than I care to think about. You're just coming out of high school and starting into life with this project - I retired at age 60 from a desk job in New York City, sold my suburban New Jersey home and moved to twenty acres of woodland in Michigan, where I am building our new house, timber frame with strawbale infill, using lumber I'm harvesting from our woodland. I do use a chainsaw, but an enormous amount of hand tool work has gone into our projects as well. So you and I are doing similar things at opposite ends of life ;) I wish you all the best.

    • CircumcisionIsChildAbuse
      CircumcisionIsChildAbuse Vor 2 years +1

@Erik Grankvist yeah but compared to using a chainsaw I think I'd find myself getting fed up with doing it by hand. Being able to hew a log in a quarter of the time by chainsaw seems convenient considering how long the entire process actually takes. I think I'd be living on site with no utilities when I build mine too so I dont want to be messing around too much.

    • Erik Grankvist
Erik Grankvist  Vor 2 years +9

@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse I just go for it and have the mindset that anything is possible with time and patience. If I can do it (who has never done this before) you can!
Of course it is quite hard work by hand. But I try to work slow and steady. It does not take that long to cut a tree down, debranch it, saw it to wanted length, when you get a hang of the work.

    • CircumcisionIsChildAbuse
      CircumcisionIsChildAbuse Vor 2 years +2

@Erik Grankvist cant be much different than canadian spruce. but its good to know that I have that option.
If you don't mind another question, I can see you're clearly super adapt at doing essentially everything by hand, how hard is it actually to do it all by hand versus a chainsaw. cause I can't imagine getting far into a project like that before saying, fuck it, and grabbing a chain saw.

    • Erik Grankvist
Erik Grankvist  Vor 2 years +6

@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse I don't know how the spruce is in other countries. But in Scandinavia the spruce is really really good for building. Yes the limbs are a negative but it don't bother me.

    • CircumcisionIsChildAbuse
      CircumcisionIsChildAbuse Vor 2 years +2

@Erik Grankvist really? i thought spruce was too prone to rotting and had a million limbs to have to screw with cutting off. figured it was white or red pine.

Tip for hand felling if you can use your saw to make the base cut the chop out the face with the ax then make back cut with saw. I’ve tried it it’s not easy to get started but it works great!

    • S
      S Vor 2 years

Erik Grankvist yes you are. I added in the base cut with my saw so to make a nice clean flat base for the tree to pivot on. Instead of having the rough base the ax leaves.

    • Erik Grankvist
Erik Grankvist  Vor 3 years +3
