  • Hi
    Hi Vor 9 Minuten

This is awesome! I would just like to request we stop showing the Sun and Earth grossly out of scale every time someone talks about a solar flare. Half of people don't realize how ridiculously over-scaled these doomsday solar flare images are with the earth a foot away from the sun as it's engulfed in a coronal ejection. People think it's really like that and imagine a giant flamethrower torching the earth. There's a reason flat earthers exist and multiply, and images like that don't help. They love complaining about the NASA cgi

Instead, world governments spend all their money on military to fight over their corner of the planet. Imagine what we could do if we stopped fighting over a spec of dust.

Did you all know the Earth is 107.5 solar diameters away from the SUN ??

    • SineEyed 2020
      SineEyed 2020 Vor 10 Minuten

Yep. There's a similar ratio between the respective radii of the earth and sun too. That one is about 1:109 or so. You can use these figures to scale down these objects and the distance between them - which I think is really fun. Normally, the numbers involved are simply too large to really comprehend. But if we scale things down, we can actually grasp these astronomical proportions. For example, using these figures we know, let's scale down the sun so that it has a radius of 0.5 m. So, imagine our sun is a little ball of nuclear fire 1 meter across. At this scale, the earth is a teeny tiny little blue bead, only *5 mm* across; and its distance away from the 1 meter sun comes in at 107.5 meters!.. 😲
